Hulu Front End for Standard Def TV

Post by mowestusa » Tue Apr 27, 2010 3:07 pm

I'm wondering what to set up. I want to hook my computer up to a Standard Def TV to watch programs off of Hulu, but I would like to present a user interface that is simple and easy to navigate on a Standard Def TV. In the past I have hooked up GeeXBoX which worked great with a standard Def TV, but I don't believe GeeXBoX has a Hulu option. I don't know what options are out there. I have heard you talk about Boxee and others.

I'd be willing to install any distro solution or install a base distro and add a package to get the functionality. If the best option is to just run a browser than I would like to know that too, but I was thinking that on a Standard Def TV that wouldn't work out very well. Any ideas or suggestions?

The guys at mythtvcast have played with the Linux Hulu client integrated in with their Mythbuntu install..

But, you should visit the following link and base your linux flavor choice on their limitations.

What you really want to ask yourself, is whether this is going to be only for Hulu, or will you want to add on other media things to the system.. Like recording TV shows for later viewing/archiving, the same for movies that you own/purchased the rights to view, since the studios actually own the movies  Mythtv has ways to aggregate in other internet media resources as well.

Good luck with your decision...

If you connecting a video card to an SDTV you probably need a converter box that downscales it automatically. For a while I had this setup when connecting my Zotac Ion box to my old Panasonic 32" SDTV. I talked about it here:

Thanks Pat, I have the converter box for the SDTV, I have the computer. Now I just need to run the network cable to the TV area, and I need to do an install of something so I can watch Hulu. Any thoughts as to whether I should do a mythtv install or just a standard Fedora install and then install the Hulu front end? Does mythtv do a nice job integrating Hulu?
