Re: Someone in the "mainstream" press realizes Apple is evil
Interesting read, I often wondered what Apple thought of Linux being run on their Apple computers. I think maybe Apple would would be much more concerned if their software were run on non Apple computers.
Apple gets a free pass from the regulators for the most part because it has such a small market share they can get away with it. Reading into the article, one gets the impression that MSFT is not so bad after all.
If MSFT's supposed slogan is "Extend Embrace Extinguish" ...what is Apple's supposed slogan? "Control, Lock in and Smother" ?
Pat, on a different note. I heard Allentown got a F1 Tornado. How was the weather in Easton? Everything OK?

It rained a bit and was a little breezy. Not bad really. We didn't even get any considerable wind gusts. Last summer we had a freak hail/thunderstorm that had 75 mph wind gusts that caused way more damage.LinuxMint-4 wrote:Pat, on a different note. I heard Allentown got a F1 Tornado. I think the big difference between MS and Apple, with regards to the quality of their products, is that Apple's actually works a lot better. Which, given that they control both the hardware and the software is to be expected. MS has their software shoe-horned onto a mis-match of hardware and provides shitty quality control for 3rd party applications.
Apple on the other hand is a bit more aggressive with regards to quality control to the point of being harsh gate-keepers.
I have been very concerned with Apple for some time. I doubt most people would argue to their monoplistic practices given that 1) Very few people seemed concerned about MS's monopolistic practices; and 2) Unlike MS, you don't hear people having as many problems with Apple products that they do with MS products. MS is considered a joke, riddle with problems that people have to "live with." Apple is perceived as an elegant luxury.

The same can be said about Linux. Linux PCs are a hack job of miscellaneous computer parts of all kind. There is no quality control unless you buy a pre-installed system. At least with Windows, most hardware is designed for it, despite the fact that it's a hodge-podge of components.dann wrote:MS has their software shoe-horned onto a mis-match of hardware and provides shitty quality control for 3rd party applications.

While I do not disagree with you on that point, I was focusing more on the point of monopolies, which MS has been convicted of numerous times.Wally Balljacker wrote:The same can be said about Linux. I understand that Linux faces the same hardware and software issues that Windows does having to support a myriad of hardware configurations in a diverse range of software. Apple on the other hand has tighter control on this and given that you don't have to worry so much about testing your software on so many different configurations there is less opportunity for bugs to creep in.

You're a hack job. I think you must be living in some sick twisted fantasy world of Windows love. I would expect this from someone who was not a Linux user who was afraid because of the vulnerablities of windows and viruses and so on and so on. It's really scary to witness your undying effection for such a heap of absolute trash code. Windows could be called a hack job more justifiably than linux ever could. Atleast in the negative sense that you used that term. The fact is that MS being a large company cannot produce the stability and ease of use that the Linux community can provide to users. I think you're just on the forum because you are a MS proprietary fan boy who likes to use their arguments and terms to piss people off and to spread fud.Wally Balljacker wrote:The same can be said about Linux. I don't think he was talking so much about Linux as the PC's Linux tends to run on. They can be "hack jobs," comprised of a hodgepodge of hardware thrown together to get a functional system. In addition to that, most of the said hardware is has official drivers and support from the manufacturers to work under Windows. Not necessarily so with Linux. I think for how well Linux tends to run on these machines is a testament to the tenacity and skill of the Linux developers, a significant portion of whom do this for the "fun of it." That's stark contrast to the performance you get from a multi-billion dollar OS which, I will say, cannot do a better job given the resources allocated to it and the support from the vendors. Never-the-less...
Wally Balljacker is not a Troll, he's been around for a long time and we have met him in the past. While his opinions and points may not align with mine, I don't think he is trying to propagate FUD.

Re: Someone in the "mainstream" press realizes Apple is evil
lol, I have been running Linux on my main desktop for 4 years now. Why would I bother hanging around here if I wasn't a supporter of the Tech Show and FOSS? Just because I think Windows Vista gets overly criticised and isn't a complete piece of crap doesn't mean I am a Linux hater or Windows lover. If Microsoft does something good, I'm going to say so. I state what I feel, if that offends you, that's too bad.MattKingUSA wrote:Whatever, I can have my opinion. I think he loves Windows and hates Linux.dann wrote:MattKingUSA wrote: You're a hack job. And as Dann mentioned, I wasn't calling Linux a hack job, I was referring to much of the hardware it runs on. And it was almost a term of endearment if anything. It is a testament to the power of the Linux kernel that it supports such a diverse range of hardware, architectures, and devices. I think even you can admit that.
For example, my PowerMac G4 runs Fedora, with a Sound Blaster PCI card designed for x86 PCs, and half of my RAM was taken out of a Pentium 4 Windows box. Oh, and I stuck a DVD burner in there from another old Windows box. If running Linux on a PowerPC Macintosh with PC components isn't a hack job I don't know what is.

Sorry, I just thought with all of your Vista talk on the other topic that you were a Linux hater. I didn't mean to be a jerk. Sorry. I've only used Linux on my laptops full time for 2 years myself. I was using windows xp and 98 and mandriva before. I guess I shouldn't be so quick to judge.

Don't worry about it, I don't hold grudges. We are all here now because we like Linux and the Tech Show. Any differences in opinion can be put aside to unite behind our common goal of spreading FOSS.MattKingUSA wrote:Sorry, I just thought with all of your Vista talk on the other topic that you were a Linux hater. The motto of the European Union (Of which I am a big proponent) is In varietate concordia (Latin), which in English means United in diversity, I would say that describes the free software and open source world perfectly.Wally Balljacker wrote:Don't worry about it, I don't hold grudges.
