kde 4.1 out for Kubuntu

Post by elgordo123 » Tue Jul 29, 2008 1:58 pm

Kubuntu has released KDE 4.1. I just upgraded from 4.01. Really liking it. Ran into a few little things. Posted results on the kubuntu kde forum:

I am thinking of trying kde 4.1 myself. I have heard their have been a cock full of fixes and that the release is distinguishable to the previous.

gosh I hope not. I can only imagine the preview for this and then the horror show to come with the cock does come up. It would rise up along the side of the screen like the menu. Somebody will probably gimp this idea.

I gave the opensuse livdcd http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/ , a spin on virtualbox , 110 % improvement. I had no bombing out, it was just running smoothly.

Amarok alpha seems to be coming along nicely, I like the way that there is a podcast indexer built in , so no need to copy and paste a podcast url manually. jamendo is also built in as well as a few other services.

Digikam has been having a facelift as well as a new revamped advance search and the ability to find duplicate files is handy. One of the new search engines works by drawing with a paintbrush and the search will find the result. Its not as new as it sounds. I used http://www.imgseek.net/ , last year and it works great.

Okular, the all new file viewer can read out pdf's which could be handy. The overall layout is great.

FolderView is interesting , I do not understand why when clicking on a folder it opens up the directory in konquror , it should just replace the current FolderView with the new directory.

I had a quick look at KolourPaint and Krita , it does not live up to gimp, however there seems to be some progress on it.

Changing the size of the panel at the bottom was simple and the icons resize automatically to be pleasing to the eye.
Three clocks to choose from, Digital, Analogue and fuzzy. Its slick easy to move around the desktop.

Overall KDE 4 is turning into a nice usable desktop.

After having messed around with it a little bit more, I think I can tell you why. The reason is that FolderView is exactly that "A view into a folder", it's not a file browser or manager. Just like on a traditional desktop, when you click a folder the file manager launches, same thing here, the difference is that FolderView allows you to have more "views" into different folders on your system, rather than a big "folder" as your desktop.

Can't wait to get 4.1 today and try it out. Will put in my 2 cents.
