I love Ubuntu but for some reason on my laptop breezy and dapper would give me a kernel panic while trying to install. I would have to add acpi=off to the menu.lst in grub to get it to load. My main problem is that by doing that I would loose the battery gnome-power-manager. It just would not function. And not knowing when I was gonna loose power just sucks on a laptop.
So I followed the Dapper "howto compile the new kernel.org 2.6.16 kernel" thread on the ubuntuforums.org website. (great thread by the way) after about an hour later I had built myself a .deb of the 2.6.16 kernel. I installed, removed acpi=off, rebooted and whammo! it worked I know had everything working even the gnome-power-manager battery applet was working! Even suspend and hibernate was working! I was so pumped that i went to kernel.org and noticed there was a 2.6.17 kernel listed as the latest stable kernel. So I said WTF lets give it a try... not only di everything still work and it had the newest driver for my intel ipw2200 wifi card but it was a noticeable speed increase from the 2.6.15/2.6.16 kernels.
I would recommend this kernel to anyone having similar probs or anyone who just was a performance boost.
Dapper with 2.6.17 Kernel!
