Lotus Notes client for Linux
Moderators: snarkout, Patrick, dann
as a former Notes developer
I used to do a lot of Notes development in Cincinnati and made quite a living at it in the gay-ol-90s. I even got duly certified and attended Lotusphere conventions. It was way ahead of its time, and I hear Bill Gates referred to it as the app that wants to be an OS. After giving it up, I now tell people, that is the most powerful piece of shit I've ever used.
That experience combined with Microsoft ASP burnout is what I attribute to my entrance into open source development.

darn it!
The phpBB censor is at it again. It changed my S.H.I.T. to "shat" - I'm sorry, but my message just does not have the same effect at humor when you have to see through what appears to be a typo!!
It sounds like Lotus Notes WILL be coming to linux afterall:

If this happens this will be huge for linux in the business environment. Yes, email sucks in Lotus Notes but a lot of people use it for the database/workflow capabilities. Besides email my company uses it for the following :
- software turnover tracking
- contact lists
- conference room scheduling
- documentation repository
- defect tracking
I really hope this comes to pass.

Ego contemno licentia
I'm not joking at all when I say that the place I work for has invested at least half a mil in in-house notes development. We *depend* on it for everything from customer databasing to order placement to email. It's nuts.
Shared pain is lessened, shared joy is increased; thus do we refute entropy.

I just got an email from Jeff Eisen with a clarifcation:
"There are basically three things: what's available now, what's available
pretty soon, and what's available early next year.
Now: We don't have a version of Notes that runs natively on Linux. We
are aware that many people run Notes successfully under the WINE
enumulator on Linux, but this is not a supported configuration.
Pretty Soon -- that is, this year: The Workplace Managed Client (WMC)
which is Eclipse-based will have a Notes application plug-in that runs on
Linux allowing all Notes applications (except those with explicit Windows
dependancies) to run on Linux. This will run Notes applications but will
not have the traditional Notes "shell" that you are accustomed to on
Windows.
Early Next Year: Hannover will be released which is the next release of
the Notes client. Like the plug-in above, it will be Eclipse based and
will not have the traditional Notes shell. It will have significantly new
Notes functionality as well as improved look and feel. It will also have
tight integration between Notes template based applications and Java based
Eclipse plug-ins allowing a new class of composite applications."
