Im going to try Debian. Thanks for all the info. Gomer_x, I've done the tweak you mentioned and then some. It still chugs along. I really think the biggest problem is im maxed out at 192megs of ram. If I could go up to 512meg it would run better.

Wireless networking + Debian? Any problems? Im using linksys network card :)

Wireless is difficult in Linux. I've got a wired ethernet card in my laptop, and I had to use ndiswrapper and the Windows driver to get it to work.

Post the part number of the Linksys card and I'm sure someone can help you find what chipset it uses and if it is supported. It can be a pain, but it's not impossible.

I use the Linksys WMP54G Wireless card in Gentoo. Its pretty easy to set up, I just emerged rt2500 and set up the network interface in /etc/conf.d/net. You should check that there are drivers for linux and try not to depend on ndiswrapper sometimes ndiswrapper doesn't work for me.

The card I have is a hybrid between the RTL8129 and RTL8139 chipsets. The 8139too driver should work, but I haven't had any luck. What little info I can find on the web shows that other people haven't had much luck either. The card comes with a driver as source, but it was so bad it wouldn't compile. I even hacked the Makefile then the source (it had some 2.4 kernel specific code) and couldn't get it to work.

For now just having a driver that works is better than nothing.
