Google Search 2001 The way it was January 2001

Its like being transported back to January 2001. I checked the World Trade Center home page. I tried to transfer the WTC home page here but it would not let me.

I typed in silver prices and came up with this gem "Silver prices reached a cyclical low of $4.88 purchase domestically mined silver at $0.90". $4.88 a ounce! Now you are lucky if you can find a Morgan Silver Dollar for under $20.

Or this gem from the Financial Express

"London gold fixed at $295.75 a troy ounce in the morning, down on Friday
afternoon's $296.15. Spot prices were last wandering at $295.55/$296.05"

Enjoy surfing.... is it time to defrag my Windows 2000 ? lol

I remember when you had to email a server to do lookups for you and then you would get a return email with the results. I am trying to remember which was the first web based search engine I used. I do not think it was google though. I can not remember. It might have been yahoo or something like that. I had heard of the wtc but only in passing.

Not sure what you mean by "transfer it here", but you can see the WTC page as it was on 2001-03-01 here:
http://web.archive.org/web/200103012009 ... .wtca.org/

The google link is interesting, but is just the _index_ as it was in January of 2001; the pages themselves are linked to the internet archive, where they have always been available.

The first search engine I can remember is Yahoo, although I also remember using altavista.

I remember there being indexes back when the web was small enough to catalog. AOL had it's own index, and there was something called the Internet Yellow pages or something similar.

With most people using AOL, Compuserve and Prodigy in the early days it was years before there was a need for a search engine.

First search engine I used (1995) was Infoseek.

Today I use Alltheweb, Altavista, then Google 3rd. Someone's got to step up and try to prevent Google from becoming a monopoly.
