Any recommendations for low cost web hosting. I would be looking for rather small space requirements for one of my friends, hopefully under $10 a month. Then something with a bit more space for myself for audio file storage.

http://www.routhost.com/ seems pretty good. $2.95/month, 750Mb space, 20Gb bandwidth, PHP, MySQL, and unlimited subdomains. I just did a search on http://www.hostcart.com so I havn't tried it but it sounds pretty good for your friend. You can find one for yourself there because I don't know how much bandwidth or space you need.

I use hostgo.com -- I dunno if they're exactly what you're looking for, but they have a $6.95 a month/1.5 G space plan. There's cheaper out there, for sure, but I'm happy.

My site is hosted through Earthlink. Currently you can get their most basic package for $10 a month. It's a Unix server with 2 gigs of space, 30 mailboxes, 20 gigs of traffic per month. I've found that I get excellent bandwidth, and their administration tools are good. They run Apache and have Perl CGI available. The docs say they have PHP as well, but I haven't messed with it.

It's a more expensive solution, but they're a big company with a good reputation. I've never known them to be down. I think the servers are in California.

Edit: See below. I am no longer recommending that anyone use Earthlink as a web host (unless you want poor service at high prices). They're not a bad ISP, though.

I was hoping the Linux Link Tech Show guys would pop in on this thread, because they found a low cost provider for their audio files.

I'm starting to look for cheaper hosting with more bandwidth. Are you still happy with this provider? Do you know what OS they run on their servers?

Anybody else have advice for decent web hosts? I want a secure, reliable company that runs Unix/Linux on their servers. I need at least Perl 5, but PHP would be nice also. Currently I'm paying $20 a month for 20 gigs of traffic, and I need at least twice that much bandwidth.

;funny, i *just* got off the phone with a marketing firm that was offering me a web hosting quote... they obviously got my name from one of my domain registrations, but they were conveniently ignorant of how they got my phone number when i asked them.

;i drew the line when they started probing for more information. i checked out their web site and they were significantly more expensive than my current host. no wonder... they have to pay for all that marketing somehow.

;aaaaanyway, i use 1&1. i'm still using their "free professional preview" package for my personal domains. i use one of their dedicated (linux) root servers for sites that i host. i've been really happy with them.

Just to follow up, I went ahead and switched to 1and1. They seemed the best and most professiional of the companies I looked at. I'm getting 10 gigs of space and 500! gigs of monthly bandwidth for $10 a month. Hard to beat that. I also get SSH access to the server and CGI supprot in Perl, Python or PHP.

I'm waiting on the domain registration to get updated and the DNS changes to propogate, but so far it seems pretty cool.

edit: Another update. 1and1 just updated my hosting account (without any prompting from me) to 20 gigs of storage, and 1000 gigs (yes, a full terabyte) of bandwidth per month, all for $10 a month. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with a terabyte of bandwidth, but I'll think of something.

I don't really know how this stacks up to the others right now, but I use ipowerweb.com. They have a really nice interface for administration.

I know what you are thinking, but no, Apple does not own it. I am waiting for the day when Apple decides to sue them for using an 'i' in their name.

Anyone know of a descent program off hand to create a web page? I am going to try and make one, I have a shaw site ready to go.

I went to synaptic and seems many to chhose from like Bamboo, cherrypy, python albatross, quixote. Could I use open office? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Bluefish and Quanta Plus are two excelent coding programs for web pages. If you don't know how to code you can try NVU or the Open Office one (I don't the OO version is very good though).

Also this might give you some usefull stats on a bunch of popular hosts

I'll tell you all this: There is *NO* better html or php editor than vim. 'Nuff said.

Yeah there is, it's called bluefish and I use it all the time.

But, for portablilty, vi does score major points. But on that note, so does ed (most Unix systems have that too).
