Just heard last night's show where Linc talked about his issues with Flash and GMail. AFAIK, GMail uses Flash only for the chat sound notifications in case you aren't in the GMail window. I think that if you just disable the chat feature in GMail, there won't be any Flash involved. Worth a try.

even if you disable sounds, there is still flash embedded in the page.
you can however, click "older version" up in the top right of the page. this will not use flash but i can't find a way to use this page by default.
