VPN query using PoPToP

Post by gordonmarkus » Tue Nov 21, 2006 12:31 pm

Hi everyone,

Firstly - I like the new theme! Very nice!! (I've been away for a bit, so sorry if this isn't new to the rest of you!)

I was wandering if anyone on here has experience of using PoPToP as a PPTP server with a windows (sorry - I can't help it!) client.

I've got the pptp server running ok on my centos4.4 box, I configured it via webmin rather than editing the individual files, but I can't seem to get the windows box to connect - I've tried just about every setting, but can't get them to work (even when they are sat on the same LAN next to each other)

There is a higher pupose - once the VPN is running, I can connect ot the centos box from my office and work in a centos environment via a remote desktop, rather than running in the painful windows environment!!

Thanks in advance for you comments,

-Gordon.

Hi everyone,

Just to let you know that I got this sorted last night. Basically the problem was that the kernel in my distro didn't have the MPPE encryption built in, so I needed to install that seperately. Now it's up and running, and works like a dream!

I definitely recommend giving it a go if you need to get on your machine remotely.

Another bonus is that need only open 1 port on your firewall (1723) rather than all the ports for the individual apps that you might need to get to.

Sorry if this is old news to you, but I'm impressed!!

-Gordon.
