Tried to get on the forum from work this morning and was blocked by their "firewall" software due to content ("hobbies, inerest").

I can only figure they must have plugged "Linux"? into the list last week. Is there something else in the Meta data or something that would otherwise have done it? Just wondering...Anywho...

Interested if others have the same issue and if any IT guys (I'm an Industrial Maintenance Electrician/Electronic Tech turned Manager) here might agree with this or maybe shed some more light on their logic (blocking "Linux" or whatever).

I swear it seems that sometimes you get your job done in spite of the IT department, but then I can also imagine the havoc that could ensue with 100 Windows machines wide open.

Why do you assume that it's the word 'linux' that is being blocked?

It could be that someone in your IT department or somewhere else saw the logs of the server. Saw a site that you were visiting and determined that it was not of value to your work and cut you off.

Or it could be an automated firewall that got it's list updated from some third party company. If you ask your IT staffers nicely they may whitelist the site. But with your apparent attitude toward your IT staff, that's probably not going to happen.

Chuck, forgive me if I came across wrong , I understand that there are reasons why IT departments have to regulate access (that's what I meant by the comment that I can understand the havoc that having 100 unregulated Windows machines could wreak).

I actually spent a year at a job acting as the "local" IT guy, in addition to being an Automation Tech (the Purchaser was doing it before, so it was a step up for them anyway). The home office was in Belgium, so you figure I was pretty "local". Anywho my only know-how was self-taught and maybe a couple of networking seminars beforehand but afterward (when they hired a real IT guy) I did take and pass the Network+ exam (just to have something to show for my heartache).

But anyhow, my statement about getting your "job done inspite of the IT department" takes all that into consideration. For the average user, that's probably not true, but someone like myself who'll be doing more than the average user with not much more access, it is tricky at times, and we're a pretty big company with a pretty busy IT dept (mostly remote).

I also didn't mean to say that I thought that I should have access to TLLTS
at work necessarily, it has been nice, and not anything I feel that i've abused, but that was my question...I defer to guys who are in IT for their opinion.

I was actually mostly interested in how you guys might think it got blocked. The idea about a third party updating the lists might be the ticket, like I said, just something I was wondering, and thought it might be interesting to see how many people here have TLLTS blocked at their work.

Just a follow-up, I'm back on at work (on my break). I doubt you guys changed anything, so maybe there's a closet Linux or TLLTS fan in the company hierarchy.

I'd be more likely to think they were blocking PHPBB rather than Linux. I could be wrong, though.

Our filters are pretty severe and I can still get in, although I can't get to flickr or frappr. Our proxy does mess with things sometimes so I'll have to wipe all cookies and offline content from IE before I can log in.
