We need an "Embrace, extend, and exterminate " option in the poll. I really think if Linux can roll over the Microsoft space, rolling over Apple will be a cake walk. Apple is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. It would be like Chevy holding back on truck competition with Toyota because they think Volkswagen will come out of nowhere. Focus too much on the little fish, and the big fish wipes out your business. Cell phone companies make this mistake constantly.

Interoperability with Windows in the early 90s, virtualization and desktop switching recently, and now this whole Quartz thing with their graphics compositing...

I think Apple's already chasing Linux and has been for years.

Are you sure..... Apple so original they bought cups to fix printing problems, borrowed from bsd (to replace os9), X11 added to desktop features, tcpip (to replace appletalk) and other technologies linux has used for years.

Wow - I guess I didn't realize that Linus invented tcp/ip. That's cool! Lots of people have borrowed that technology, and WE, the LINUX PEOPLE made it happen! I wonder how they got around the GPL - they must be thieves! Those fuckers! Wow! Then yes, Apple, the multi-billion dollar company that started the entire home computer revolution in the 1980s, *must* be "riding the linux wave." And, hey wow, by those definitions, Windows is just riding the Apple wave. That means LINUX IS #1!!!! HOLY SHIT!!! LINUX FTW!!!!!

linux did not invent tcpip, but the linux world used it quite a bit longer than Apple ever did. I think that linux was a big part in help making it the standard. tcpip has trumped ipx, tokenring, arcnet, appletalk, and windows (netbeui/windows protocols)..

FWIW, I'm well aware of what tcp/ip is. Apple has had support for tcp/ip since system 6 which was released well before Linux was even a notion. I don't care at all about this argument at all, I just think it's laughably absurd to say that apple is riding the Linux Wave, even if you expand that to Open Source Wave. Apple has been popular for years, and remains popular due to a number of reasons, though none of them are because (thanks largely to the Ubuntu Media Juggernaut) Linux is now gaining widespread exposure.

I am sure you are right, but I do not remember seeing it back then. To my knowledge, Apple certainly did not push that protocol. I am no expert on apple, but I have used system 6 and 7, years ago on the old jackintosh. Apple has always been popular in the publishing and graphic arts. To be honest, I would prefer not to argue about this either. If someone has the green, I will use whatever they have. We owned 4 g3's till day before yesterday. I trashed 3 of them for spare parts for my older intel pc's. Someone just gave me another p3 yesterday. I used some of the spare parts and then wiped win2k off of it for debian.
