Especially when the only two models that MAY work are the absolute cheapest, which brings up a concern about quality even if the driver support is good enough.
Well you'll have to do a little more research then. I found those scanners and didn't spend a ton of time looking for them. Definitely ask around some of the other linux BB/sites. I'm sure you'll find something closer to what you're interested in. Unfortunately we're not at the point where we can pick up any old scanner and assume it works. This is also true for BSD and Mac users.

I've been through that list many times and to most every sellers website looking for model numbers that match. There are none that match the complete support under $400. Most of the scanners claim to support mac osx.

Unfortunately we are at a point where we can't pick up ANY scanner and assume it works.

I just bought a cheap Canon LiDE 25 that seems to go for around $50 that works literally straight out of the box, no config files to edit or anything. As with most scanners, the panel buttons don't work but it seems to work well for the price overall for me

According to the Sane database scanners with a good rating work just fine for scanning but some or all of their wizbang features may not work. For instance, a button to automatically start your scanning application and do a scan.

Since there have been a few posts about the Canon, I think that is your best bet for now. It's not too expensive and should do the job your mom wants done.

If anyone is interested in getting all the buttons on your scanner to work you can follow this how-to:

Personally this isn't that important to me. I'm happy to control the scanning via kooka or xsane.
