Seriously, What the Hell is MythTV?
Hi All,
I listen to the show and I hear the hosts talking about what shows they're taking/watching on MythTV. Unless I'm a totally dweeb I can't seem to fully understand what MythTV is, on their web site. I know it's a package I install on my linux box, but there seems to be a way to transfer stuff to my TV, web browser, etc?
What's the source input for these shows? Is is my current cable provider or is it FREE from the web or what? Thanks for answering my questions. Right now I'm installing it via YUM and it's installing 77 packages - Woah!

Re: Seriously, What the Hell is MythTV?
MythTV allows you to watch/record/save TV shows on your Linux box. You need a TV Tuner card to actually use it.
Re: Seriously, What the Hell is MythTV?
Is a card that has a coaxial port considered a TV Tunner or do I specifically need to buy one that says "tv tunner"? With that said, it looks like the "tv" part is actually coming from my existing cable service then?

They are usually PCI cards with Coax inputs. So you'd plug your television cable into it, and, provided it's supported under Linux, watch TV with something like TV Time or MythTV.

If you want to play around with Myth and you don't have a tuner card yet, get yourself a Hauppauge PVR-150. You can buy them on ebay for as cheap as $35. I just picked up a used one on ebay with a remote for $40 shipped.

At least in ubuntu, you can add mythtv (frontend/backend) features directly from the repos now. I have been watching tv on my linux box since suse 7.x or 8.x .
