Episode #254 and Lindependence Day Rep.

Post by Fergatron » Thu Jul 17, 2008 6:01 pm

I really enjoyed the conversation in the first half of the show. It was really neat to see such a calm perspective on the matter. It made sense that some of us can get a bit tribal when folks talk bad about linux. My two cents on the matter is, if the "bad mouthers" take into perspective the great advancements that the FOSS community is making AND NOT getting paid nor funded for their efforts - that's way better than what the private companies are doing. A lot of developers, testers, etc work full-time jobs, have families and still find time to work on their projects. You can't say the same thing for EVERY paid developer out there working with a private company producing programs that aren't open source. Kudos to FOSS community and linux rocks!

The Lindependence Rep. I forget his name, but he always trips me out when he's on. It sounds like he's doing 50 different things while doing the interview. And at the end of it all there is usually dead silence. I'm glad to see that there was some success with the project and it looks like they just need more volunteers (like us) to help out being a community for the participants of their project. Monitor the forums, chat rooms, etc.

Just my two cents.

I hope there are more lindepence days also. I was thinking of making t-shirts with "Ask me about Linux.".on them.

Having to get a new computer and new software to upgrade it for OS x or Windows:......$3,000
Using my existing computer and equipment and then installing linux for free: ..................Priceless

It was great to have Randal on and get a few things ironed out. It puts Pat's objections in perspective to get an outside opinion. It was also a really good discussion about Linux advocacy. It's easy to lose sight of how little Linux means to the rest of the world (outside our community) and it was good to get a broader perspective.

I had to chuckle about Linc telling Randal he shouldn't talk about Linux not meeting his needs since he hasn't used it in years. Aren't you the guy who badmouths Red Hat for a mistake they made 8 years ago without using it until recently? :D I've got to give Linc props for changing his opinion about Red Hat lately, though.

I guess that's one of the reasons I ran Gentoo on a couple systems for most of a year. I try not to criticize something I haven't used (with the possible exception of KDE :)).
