Wow... I am having all sorts of issues with mythbuntu 9.10. I started getting the erratic screen flashing some issues are reporting so I switched up to the latest stable nVidia drivers (190.42). That was a mistake.

Installing the 190 drivers would force an uninstall of mythtv. To get mythtv back I would need to use a 'testing' repository. I didn't like that idea since I am a new user, but I gave it a shot.

'Testing' was not fun. Everything installed beautifully and I was able to get everything setup. However, when I tried to watch live TV it just went back to the menu. After some trouble shooting, I found out I had some Lirc issues. I was told on the myth-users IRC that my channel script was wrong and I noticed that the script referred to a kernal module that was not loaded; lirc_cmndr (or something like that).

At that point, I figured it was time to go back to ground zero and try this again. My first mythbuntu 9.10 install was a 64 bit version. I figured that may be contributing, so I switched to the 32 bit version. That resulted in an epic fail.

Everything installed beautifully, I configured mythtv and restarted. At that point I got a NTP service loop that prevented the system from logging in. Others have reported the same issue Karmic Won't boot after upgrade.

I didn't see that post above, so I just thought I would try the 64 bit again, but I encountered the same NTP problem. I don't know why I get the NTP issue now and never got it when I first started, but it's a show stopper.

I am not really sure what to do at this point. I am going to see if I can get the 32 bit version of mythbuntu working by trolling through the forums, but I am beginning to wonder if I should try another distro. I just don't know which one would have the 0.22 release that I need for my hd pvr.

I won't give up! After all this practice, I can almost get mythbuntu installed in Dann's epic 8 minute timeframe...

Right now Mythbuntu is the only Myth specific distro running with MythTV 0.22 and the 2.6.31 kernel. That's the combination you'll need for the PVR-1212. I feel bad you're having so many problems. I had issues with the installer on both my systems but got through it. Check out my blog post:

Yeah, it has been a nightmare so far. In any case, I decided to try installing mythbuntu 64 bit again. This time I did not select the nVidia drivers and just kept the open source ones.

It is able to boot properly now, and I am finishing the mythfilldatabase part now. Hopefully this will work for the short term.

i ran into the same NTP loop problem with my first attempt. then i started over and did not select any optional option and it worked. i then went back and setup my remote,vnc etc. after about 5 hours of trial and error i got it working part way. then kernellabs.com was down and i couldn't get the drivers for my HVR-2250.... i almost pulled an elvis and shot the TV..... almost.

I've got it up (ha ha) but my pchdtv 5000 card is still very flakey..

eventually i gave up Saturday night after working on it all day. i plugged in my old hard drive and will attempt it again next weekend.

do you guys plan on taking any skype call for the show ?

Maybe we'll do a call in show. Skype no. Asterisk (+any SIP client) yes. I hope it doesn't turn into a complete bitchfest. While Mythbuntu 9.10 has some issues it IS the first to offer MythTV 0.22 and 2.6.31 Linux kernel. I'll try to announce ahead of time when we record next.

A call in show with friendly and helpful hosts with knowledge of mythtv is too good to be true!

I hope you guys do that. It would be a huge help...

If you do decide to take calls on your next show, I would be happy to participate and give my positive opinions on Karmic and MythTV .22. Please post details about what software is required for SIP calls as I am not familiar with this format.

I am really jealous that you have it working. The more I dive into it the more issues I find and need to resolve.

I tried to import a dvd last night and the interface didn't appear to be working well. It looked like there were elements that were 'there' but not visible. The rip interface was a huge step down from the main menu interface (probably a config thing from my end, I assume). It wouldn't import either.

I tried to play a dvd and I got no audio, but the video was fine. LOL, so close and yet so far...

I don't blame mythbuntu for my woes. I did my research on the hardware, but I clearly underestimated the tweaking involved in getting it working.

But for mythtv to really take off, we need folks like the 'buntu' team to make it as simple as it could be. If they are able to get mythtv as drop dead easy as Ubuntu, then I could see lots more folks using mythtv.

just catching up with this post ... I also just updated my Mythbuntu box to 9.10:

1. Auto log-in was disabled when it was previously enabled
2. Non-free codecs/repos were also disabled when it was previously enabled

Those two issues took about five minutes to fix. I have successfully tested video playback, web interface and audio catalog playback ...
still have not tried DVD importing

I really like the themes and it feels a bit quicker than the previous release ...

I started over with Linhes. Their latest release supports mythtv 0.22. I really liked the install with linhes. It was very similar to mythbuntu, but appeared to be a wee bit faster.

It is documented very well and there are several folks that are responding rather quickly to questions. I will continue with that distro and see how it goes. I wish the support for the hd pvr blaster was built in. I am going to try to add that in somehow.

But it is a little more fun with Linhes (don't know why?)
