The problem with Linux and MythTV (bait line)

Post by marc » Sat Mar 05, 2011 10:35 am

Unfortunately for this forum, the problem with Linux and MythTV is that once configured it keeps working indefinitely and we have nothing about which to post or complain.

Good lord when was the last time I rebooted or even touched my MythTV backend?
Oh I remember, the power company was changing out the electric meters for the newer radio reporting automated versions.

I put a line conditioner/UPS inline now. So, not even a short power outage cause a problem.

Sigh, linux reliability can be thankfully boring at times.

Yet another round of hardware changes have meant restarts were needed recently.

I turned off my combined FE/BE yesterday evening after 9 days continuous trouble free running as there was nothing i wanted to record or jobs waiting.

As i have mentioned before i am in the UK and I am now running a pair of dual tuner usb dvb-t (KWorld 339u) devices to receive the Freeview free to air service
(received via UHF Aeriel). In addition to these tuners i also now am using a TBS 6981 dual tuner dvb-S2 card to receive the Freesat service (carried by the Astra satellites).

The Freesat service carries some HD channels (bbc and itv so far). The data rates on these channels is 4 times that of SD, so the large storage
that a mythtv back end can provide is very necessary.

I recently upgraded the living room tv from an old Toshiba 36" crt to a Panasonic 37 " lcd. I have also upgraded the remote front end to cope with HD and be able to feed
picture signal via HDMI to the LCD. I bought another Sony ps3 bluray remote and Belkin blue tooth dongle to use with this front end.

All working really nicely, HD picture is perfect on the LCD tv (i have a cable tv box (virgin media) and quality is identical).

Things left to do: tidy up channel listings and change cpu fan in remote front end for a quieter one.

Cool! I'm pleased to see another sony PS3 remote user.
I used this solution for a while but gave up after going through batteries like water down the basin.

What kind of battery life do you have? Have any changes given sleep options that work well enough for the remote?
Please share your experiences using bluetooth and the PS3 DVD remote!

Storage:
Yes, HDTV eats space like mad. I often record a season of a show before I actually watch it. I like tearing through episodes in one setting without commercials. As a result, I was always chasing down old recordings for removal and saving the right ones and it was a chore to say the least. About mid-December I added an HD tower/raid box and some cheap 2TB Samsung drives, I'm finally in a comfortable zone with storage. The new mount is running a software raid 5 giving me 6TB of storage after sacrificing a 2TB drive for parity. I'm no longer keeping an eye on remaining storage... well, at least for the time being.

Super thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences!

I do know what you mean about looking through recordings to see what you can delete. Before recently getting my 2TB drive for recordings i was using the myth native archive option
to move some recording to the videos drive to make space.

I see 3TB drives are now available, so increasing storage in the future is not a worry. RAID (mirroring) would be good for safety at some point in the future.

The trick with the PS3 remote to get sensible battery life is the 'idle timeout' setting, which breaks the link to avoid battery drain.

I have used the uinput kernel module method of connection. See these links

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Sony_PS3_BD_Remote

http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=HOW-TO_Setup_PS3_BD_Remote

The idle timeout is set in the /etc/bluetooth/input.conf file. The value is set in seconds (not minutes). I am currently using 300 and 600 on my 2 systems. To be honest a longer setting to
avoid disconnection between ad breaks may be better. Reconnection does not take very long, 2-3 seconds after that response is instant. I installed Blueman and this gives a nice interface while
doing the initial setup, It also gives a logo on the task bar on the desktop screen. This logo gets a green dot added to it when you have an active connection.

I really rate the PS3 Bluray remote as an option. It looks good, works well (no line of sight issues) and is good value (under £25 with the Belkin BT dongle) and does not sport a Microsoft logo...
