any recomendation for a handheld cheap video player

Post by lobosolo » Sat May 01, 2010 12:06 pm

Hey guys, i am looking for something i can give to my 2 year old daughter to watch when i take her on bike rides. she gets bored after an hour sitting in her little bike trailer. i cant hand here my android phone, i assume it will not come back in one piece.

so if anyone can think of a small device that can play video and has an external speaker and battery power that i can transfer a few kids show over to, please let me know.

i think in 2 years my phone contract is up and i could unlock my droid and use it for a video player, but i need something in the mean time.

God save me for saying this, I was at office max a few hours ago and found a Zune 8 GB for fifty bucks.

A clearance item I think... not open box. Needless to say, I set it back down because I don't know if these can be used with linux or hacked.

I've always liked the archos series but they are not cheap unless you find one on sale somewhere like Sams club or overstock dot com.

Have you looked at the Ultra Mobil PC's. Not sure if they are a fad running short of a market but I have a Samsung Q1 Ultra. I have not tried video on it but I think it will work. Its a little big underpowered but should have enough. I think you can find them for fairly cheep now. I have Ubuntu Mobile (now defunct) on it. I've been thinking about putting Mer on it but don't know what the progress is on that project.

Nokia N800s can be had for a relatively cheap price on Ebay: $50-$75

I forgot about something that I should have mentioned before. One thing to look at for a mobile Linux device (and especially for media) is battery life. Mobile hardware manufacturers are notorious for leaving Linux out of the mix when developing for long battery life. They tend to optimize for Windows. I know I have somewhat of a problem with my Samsung U1 ultra.

I'd be willing to sell my Nokia N800 for $75. If you're not interested I plan on selling it on Ebay. Honestly I haven't used it much since getting my Nexus One.
