Whoever invented that breaking-glass sound needs a hot needle in the eye. It's not only a shitty sound to hear, but it's entirely inappropriate to scare the fsck out of users just because an app crashed. I think the term "anti-human" applies well to that sound. I remember this hilarious virus on wi...

Cuba is perhaps the closest to a communist state, there are a lot of things i do not agree with like freedom of press, but there are some interesting things like free education upto any age, free water, free air conditioning and a few other things. Absolutely nothing is free. Someone is paying for ...

Linux fans went nuts. Why? Because they hate Microsoft. They viewed the deal as a way for Microsoft to assert that Linux violated some Microsoft patents. Novell, by going along, was collaborating with the enemy, they said. Holy shit, talk about misleading. I remember reading more professional artic...

Do you guys think he will get off? If properly worked, the angle of her murderous ex-boyfriend could be powerful to throw in doubt with the jury. Not to mention the ex-boyfriend being into sadomasochism. But I remember there being some pretty good evidence. The missing seat in his car, the books on...

I don't really understand what the problem is. I've found that judicious use of ./configure options is all that's needed to compile unusual/bleeding-edge software. Right now I have 12 different versions of SBCL (a lisp compiler), Ruby 1.8.2 through 1.8.6, and countless many Ruby of Rails installed i...

I'm getting the feeling from the comments in this thread that some of you guys are misreading the Wired article. The guy that just confessed to 8 murders is NOT Hanns Reiser, but his friend and his wife's ex-lover, Sean Sturgeon. This casts doubt on whether Hanns Reiser did it. Yea, the opening to ...

Eh, ultimately the only secured computer is one unplugged from the internet, locked away somewhere. For me, and most other people Linux is secure enough. I don't feel like my system is any less secure than BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X, or anything else out there. It just comes down to where your comfort ...

Re: OPENBSD 4.1 out
I am surprised Troels has not spammed this board already with the news :P Well, I'm extremely busy writing a paper which is a part of my exams in Danish, so I havn't had the chance to upgrade one or more of the three machines that I run OpenBSD on. Plus, I get the feeling, that I am the only OpenBS...

That's brilliant! I like how simple the interface is to sqlite. I might use that some day. The only thing is that I'm currently trying to backup a wordpress database, which is already running on MySQL. Bash scripting this sort of thing would be pretty easy, but I want to learn the ropes with Python...

So far, then, we have JZA, Pat, riddlebox, ryochan7, TankCatNinjaFish, and myself interested. Sounds like a good group, does anyone have a strong preference for one of the online books mentioned? So far I think Python Programming at wikibooks has received the only mention for recommendation, so sha...

I think it's a fantastic idea. I created a wiki to get us started: http://tllts-study-group.wikispot.org/ Though if anyone else can set up a better one I'd welcome it. (edit: I decided to go with a free hosted wiki b/c i realized setting up a wiki manually on my cheapo web host account was harder t...
