Re: M$ provides police backdoor access to Vista.
I know this is tangential to the discussion about the device, but the argument "I don't plan on using my computer for crime, so what do I have to be worried about" is just too close to the "if you're not a criminal, why do you mind the police searching you" argument, since it assumes that nothing ba...

Re: I have to admit it... Vista makes a nice desktop
To clarify, I think taking advantage of freedom of choice and using whatever software one pleases, whether the source code is open or proprietary, is a greater exercise of freedom than restricting oneself to purely free software. I respect the people who feel that using only free software constitut...

Re: I have to admit it... Vista makes a nice desktop
I mean free as in freedom. I think that is a bunch of crap to be honest. I enjoy the freedom to use whatever I want, open or proprietary. What a completely useless statement. I've heard it enough that apparently it needs a response. Nobody has said you shouldn't be allowed to use whatever software ...

Re: M$ provides police backdoor access to Vista.
Ben will still run vista though ;) I don't plan on using my computer for crime, so what do I have to be worried about? This sounds like the "If you're not breaking laws, why worry about the police checking in on you" argument. Nice to see people are still willing to throw away 4th Amendment Rights ...

Re: Ballmer paper prediction
This is pure hyperbole. People have been predicting the end of paper for ages, and we're in a paper glut right now. If anything computers have just made it far easier to use more paper. Much as I love computers, I still use a HipsterPDA paper based task manager, subscribe to magazines, and check out...

Re: Ubuntu Netbook version not available for free download?
I believe this post from Mark Shuttleworth explains the situation better: http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/151 The deal they make with OEMs means they can't distribute images, but the software that runs on the laptop is free and freely available. At least that's my understanding, and I feel ...

Re: Ubuntu Netbook version not available for free download?
Detailed explanation http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/columns/ubuntu_netbook_remix_detailed_explanation It's a strange quote that I found, then. If all the software for the Ubuntu Netbook Remix is free—as in freedom—then I'll be awaiting the first subnotebooks that use it ( Dell , perhaps?) with...

Re: Newegg starting to charge taxes for orders from NY
States can't place "undue burden" on interstate commerce according to the Supreme Court, but apparently they can't stand to see something not getting taxed.

Re: No Patent reform for US - Cnet writer thinks that's great
He didn't say that patents made the U.S. great, he said that self-interest made the U.S. great. I'm guessing he means that people are self-interested by nature, and that building a system that expects humans to be supremely self-interested is better than trying to fight a natural instinct. It's hard...

Sorry, I did not mean to accentuate my own opinions over the article before anyone had read it. No need to be sorry about giving your opinion. I like hearing people's opinions. I was just surprised at how the article's meaning was lost to a few people. I'm just assuming that others read your emphas...

Re: Free software does not contribute any tax
This is slightly tangential, and I want to be clear that I'm not asking this in a sarcastic tone, but I truly want to know what it was that caused the point of the article to be ignored or misunderstood by most of the responses. I know the article wasn't as cleanly structured and written as it could...

Re: Free software does not contribute any tax
You may be getting the point of the article, but it appears to me that others aren't. The point with CALEA is that the government can use taxes and regulation as strongly persuasive tools to convince software companies to include wiretapping features in their software, enabling the government to lis...

Re: Free software does not contribute any tax
To avoid any repeat of my RMS/OLPC tantrums, I'll just say this - the person who wrote that article wasted a lot of their own time and a few minutes of mine. I have to agree with you completely on this one. We are talking about people contributing value to the community and helping their neighbors ...

Re: Stallman - Can we rescue OLPC from Windows?
I felt that same lack of energy and desire when I frequented the "Anything Goes" forum. Particularly when many people seem more interested in dismissing others views than really learning from one another. Just doesn't seem productive. I appreciate you taking the time to respond, though, and did want...
