Re: eeepc question

I've two. One still has the default and is about 2.4 GB used of 3.7 - with 1.2 free, or 32%. Thats with nearly nothing extra but some configuration changes. My second has eeeXubuntu 3.0GB used of 3.7GB and that leaves 520 MB free, or 14%. eeeXubuntu has a pile of customized stuff - used it a lot sin...

You would have to look at what inhouse skills your work has available, the second solution is possibly the cheapest and works well, but you would need someone to set it up and maintain it. Whereas if you paid novell , you would get the solution but at a monetary price. True. The necessity to train ...

Evaluating Linux at my workplace.

Hi all. We are setting up the hardware for a Linux lab at my work - this lab is to evaluate moving from a MS Server 2003 AD (XP Pro on the desktops) to an open alternative. I'm the prime motivator for doing this. I have Google'd but have not found great references on doing 100+ desktops/laptops in a...

I recommend it. Can you do it manually - of course. Could you find a better use of your time - I hope so.

Set it up - install the selections that you want then you never need to use it again. Apt-get will keep your debs up to date, as long as you leave the sources alone.

Re: Beryl, Edgy, ATI and my T60

By the way, this is one awesome machine. It only has the Core Duo chip but it performs very well and edgy went on it so smoothly. Even the wireless chip worked out of the box. I had 5 Thinkpads series laptops through the last three years - using both Linux and Windows. Of all the Thinkpads, I disli...

Re: it won't work

I tend to think that Larry is pissed at redhat for something other than buying jboss - I don't see oracle and jboss really competing or being the same product. I always thought jboss was more middleware like coldfusion, websphere, zope-python, than it was a database backend. Oracle is the company, ...

Red Hat charges $3000 for a license and it costs $5000 for an Oracle database license. Oracle will now bundle in their own supported version of Red Hat with a database license for just an an additional $1000. Red Hat - $3000 + Oracle database - $5000 = $8000 or get it all from Oracle for just $6000...

I had this conversation in my Local LUG a year ago. The conclusion was: No I dont want to sleep RMS, so I dont need him to be pretty to make a decision if I am free or not. You are right - 'pretty' has nothing to do with it. 'Professional' should. I think 'Free' has gone past the fringe outsiders f...

Painful but interesting.

It was a painful show to listen too - even before Linc attempted to ask his questions. I was thinking before that point that RMS style of talking (and forcing others to do the same) came right out of the Jargon file's Hacker Speech Style . Knowing, before the interview, that RMS can be a rather stro...

Ordered myself a System 76 Gazelle Performance (max'd out with the optional toys) for my birthday - anxiously awaiting delivery. Was interested when I heard the Linux Action Show review and was sold when I listened to the TLLTS interview.

Great guest guys!
