The stuff on W3Schools is always what I end up looking at (mostly because it
is usually the first thing in my Google results.)

Quirksmode has a more in depth compatibility chart:

I would look for a framework you can start using right away (i.e. jquery,
mootools, etc.) These have handy functions/selectors/etc that get around
most of the cross browser issues you could run into. Both have good
documentation on their own site.
