Heh. Somebody on the discussion list where I saw this said
that Portland has a wing place with Trivial Pursuit on the
tables -- the board game. I was wondering how often they had
to buy new board games after people got their sticky chicken
wing fingers all over the cards.
It wasn't so much the touch screens but the way they're
applying social networking and user-generated content to the
restaurant/bar biz. The customers make their own
entertainment, playing trivia games with each other (so you
can flirt). I call this the "Bake Your Own Bread and
Circuses" model. DIY is the name of the game. Less expense
-- in principle -- b/c people provide the entertainment.
It's targeting the tech/geek/nerd crowd because the
entertainment isn't a band (sorry Zach :), dancing, or
wall-to-wall big screens featuring sports, or video games,
casino games, and pool tables. Instead, the entertainment
are the "users" who are providing their knowledge and skill
at trivia as the entertainment. You can find out who's smart
(so you can flirt). I'd imagine you'll get an entirely
different crowd of partiers and diners than you'd get at yer
average run-of-the-mill Baxter's or chain like Applebees and
TGIFridays.
Apparently, they're also using on-the-fly translation
technologies to translate the menu - eliminating the need to
have print copies. And, incidentally, eliminating the need
for print menus altogether which makes it a lot easier to
add/remove menu items -- a big deal in the restaurant biz.
One of the things about the Web, which I used to stress to
our clients, was that you can, in principle, change it up,
without the expense associated with the print- and
packaging-based ways of marketing, branding, and product
development in the past.
I find it interesting that they're focusing on the "user" --
focusing on the supposed ease with which you can order your
food, refills, more napkins or silverware. More Beer!
I wonder what this will do to the waitstaff -- and tipping.
Do the wait staff get paid the wait-staff minimum wage,
depending on tips?
OK. Back to work.

||So it's sort of like Buffalo Wild Wings but with touch
screens?
||That settles it, touch screens make everything better.
