I use ulaw for everything. What kind of horrible sound are you using? What
is your setup? I do remember issues a year or two ago with a version of gcc
that caused some sound issues,(it made everything sound garbled and "tinny")
You had to go to make menuselect in asterisk source and arrow down to
comoiler flags, then check "Dont Optimize", and then compile it. There are
many variables when it comes to VoIP. It is never a plug and play solution.
You have to think of your network, codecs, transcoding, equipment.....So in
order to help I need to know what you are running asterisk on, is it vanilla
asterisk, or trixbox or something like that? Are you using an actual phone,
or softphone. If a softphone is it over wifi? How are you actually getting
the bad sound? Is it bad when you call people or is it bad when you listen
to voicemail prompts? Is your box doing conferencing as well?
