I say, boycot Motorola because of this, and their public statement that they will personally eviscerate any person found to be installing their own roms. And I say that, being an owner of an authentic, classic Motorola Droid. I will not buy another Motorola, until they publicly apologize. If I were upgrading I would go for the HTC Incredible. Haven't heard about the Incredible 2, but I'm sold on HTC. Motorola actively fights anyone trying to root their phones. Samsung is slow updating to new versions of Android. As far as ROMs go, it depends very much on the phone. I use a CyanogenMod based ROM, but Cyanogen doesn't support my phone directly. You'll probably have more luck getting direct Cyanogen support on the Incredible/Incredible 2. I'd ignore CyanogenMod 7 as it's very new. The latest CyanogenMod 6 should be quite stable and offer lots of features. Another alternative is to use the stock ROM on a rooted phone. This will allow you to use an overclocking app to cut the clock speed when the phone is idle or screen is off to drastically increase battery life. I ran a rooted stock ROM for a long time before I flashed a custom ROM. Whatever you do, have fun. :) On Tue, 2011-03-15 at 23:00 -0400, dave yates wrote: > As most of you are probably aware, I will be purchasing a long awaited > android phone shortly after my verizon contract expires on 4/27. You can even get super-strict and deny everything that's not on a white list of allowed sites. The good thing about doing it this way (network/server based) is you can configure it as a transparent proxy and configure your network to make sure that all web traffic goes through it or it doesn't get out at all. Some of those kids can be pretty tricky little hackers :-) which is a good thing in a way, but with stuff like this it can keep you on your toes making sure you've got something they can't get around. Yes, you may want to set up iptable rules as well to make sure only the filtering proxy can make connections to TCP port 80. Firestarter might be a good tool for that. -- Jonathan Rogers From mailing at vankets.com Tue Mar 22 12:31:43 2011 From: mailing at vankets.com (Bert Van Kets) Date: Tue, 22 Mar 2011 17:31:43 +0100 Subject: [Tllts] Parental control In-Reply-To: References: <4D88BF89.9020901@vankets.com> Message-ID: <4D88CEEF.4090804@vankets.com> Most of the time the parents have an old machine laying around and want to donate it to the kids because I can put some educational software on it. There's no server involved and I generally don't even have to ask if they are interested in more control by installing a server. They don't understand the need and certainly don't want an extra machine in the house. They don't have that machine either. I just want to get kids on the computer in a productive, educational manner. Most parents only know the shoot-them-up type of games on the net and don't want their five year old spending time on it. I have introduced my little girls (3 and 5) to the computer from the age 2 and clearly see the benefits. Of course they are guided and only have access to educational stuff. They love it and I'm a happy dad. Other parents are very interested when they see the results, but an old computer is all I can get in most situations. OpenDNS is a service, not software. Do you mean free of cost or free of ads? I've used it free of cost and it works pretty well. AFAIK, you only ever see ads if a name lookup fails or is blocked. Of course, any blocks in OpenDNS can be easily circumvented by using alternate name servers, such as the ones provided by the ISP. -- Jonathan Rogers From mailing at vankets.com Tue Mar 22 18:11:31 2011 From: mailing at vankets.com (Bert Van Kets) Date: Tue, 22 Mar 2011 23:11:31 +0100 Subject: [Tllts] Parental control In-Reply-To: <4D8919BA.6090804@findyourfans.com> References: <4D88BF89.9020901@vankets.com> <4D8917F7.10701@vankets.com> <4D8919BA.6090804@findyourfans.com> Message-ID: <4D891E93.1@vankets.com> Sorry, but as we are talking about very young kids and picky parents, I'd rather have a regular filter than an add based service. I want to set the bar as low as possible to get the parents to allow the kids behind the computer and learn stuff. OpenDNS is great and I have tried it, but IMHO not the best solution for my project. I told my 5 year old daughter today that I'll teach her to work with a computer and not with a particular system (aka Windows and MS Office). She understood what I was talking about about and said "Thank you daddy". I was touched. I want to give this advantage to other kids as well. I also got the confirmation form a third grade kindergarten teacher that she will include GCompris in the curriculum this year. I'm sure I can get other teachers on board if I can offer a child safe and secure system to the school. If the parents are very picky, the best approach may be a white list, as others have already suggested. Others have suggested DansGuardian. Privoxy might also be a good option, especially if you want to eliminate ads and maximize privacy. > > I told my 5 year old daughter today that I'll teach her to work with a > computer and not with a particular system (aka Windows and MS Office). > She understood what I was talking about about and said "Thank you > daddy". I hope to be able to convince some people to give at a go and get in touch with Linux and FLOSS. This will include - Installing EasyPeasy 1.6 on a hard drive, USB stick or next to Windows. - Setting the needed language (Dutch where I'm living) - Adding GCompris, TuxPaint, GnuCap (needed by GCompris) and Palapeli - Optionally setting some styling - Optionally adding TimeKpr (limit the use of the computer by user) - Optionally adding parental control I chose EasyPeasy because it's very lightweight and uses the old Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface with the large icons. It runs fine on regular desktops too. Bert MS: In life without walls ... windows crash. Thanks for the info. Fail2ban is great software. You can use active mode on OSSEC as well, which detects those and bans for 10 mins through iptables. More than enough time to discourage script kiddies. I used to use portsentry long ago too. As far as bitching and being snarky about moving ssh to a nonstandard port, you can, of course, do things however you want. I was simply commenting on my years of experience and also agreeing with every "securing ssh best practice" I have ever seen. If you listened to what I actually said, I said that moving to a nonstandard port doesn't really secure ssh, it just helps limit the eternal and inevitable script kiddie bandwidth suck as they try and force their way in. Thanks for listening to the show and for the comments Billy! -- -Linc Fessenden In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded - Yeah right... The reason is simple: we have over 100 computers worldwide doing tests in sync (telco quality tests - all the machines call each other up all day long). All test results need to be matched and aggregated and that can only be done by using one reference time, hence the UTC. So here's one situation where you could use UTC on a server: You have a distributed system spanning different timezones. It allows your data to be transportable regardless of local time. The kernel's clock ticks in UTC regardless of what your bios is storing, or what y our /etc/localtime is pointing to. Linc was talking about using your BIOS to store local time. I don't do this. I store UTC in my BIOS. I do this because I believe simpler is better, and translating it back and forth one less time is better. Keeping UTC time in the BIOS is also a traditional thing to do in serious UNIX systems. Being a long established tradition doesn't actually mean much though. You should think about and decide based on facts, not just follow tradition mindlessly. So here's the facts. You would NOT want to do this if you dual booted with a less intelligent OS, like windows, which cannot store UTC in BIOS. BIOSes generally are not aware of timezones, or daylight savings time. They simply keep time on one simple clock. That's what UTC *IS*. Local timezones have funny rules that BIOSes will never support. Those silly rules require software updates. I'm not updating my bios for something this trivial. (For example, when some president opens his mouth about changing DST rules.) The tzdata package tells your OS how to translate UTC into every localtime, and is distributed and updated periodically without rebooting. That's another good reason to use your BIOS for UTC. BIOS clock is also used in logging that the kernel can't control. If your server supports modern IPMI with logging, or the BIOS has HW event logs, or your raid card, those logs will be in BIOS time. If BIOS time changes, say, during a DST switchover, log entries there will have a gap or overlap. Do you think that hokey BIOS software is written to handle that overlap, gracefully? (I wouldn't count on it.) Then there's the logic question, of which localtime to use. You see, the choice isn't between localtime and UTC. It's between keeping actual time, or keeping some deviation of time. And then if you want some deviation in your bios, you have to pick which deviation. Which time zone is correct? If the system is used by more than just yourself, none of them are, so you should abstain from it in the BIOS, and use UTC. This kind of reminds me of cult superstitions. Throughout human history, warring factions of superstitious cults have competed for mind share among people to describe the origin of life, the universe, and everything. They've used that mind share to organize great amounts of money, and oppress the rights and freedoms of their own members and other people. And they do it in the name of righteousness! lol! They're all sure they're right, and everyone else is wrong. That's how I knew they were all wrong. LocalTime is religion. The system should be agnostic. /etc/localtime specifies the default. Users can choose an alternate with export TZ="PDT" in their .bash_profile. There are people in this world who would push their religion into every crevice they can find, thinking they're on a righteous mission. Who would like to replace reality with their religion. And it isn't always immediately obvious how wrong that is. I try not to be to grandeos as a sysadmin. Software that spans timezones should deal in UTC itself, but that doesn't have anything to do with the BIOS or /etc/localtime. The date command can fairly easily perform date-math, and convert timezones to UTC and back. Do you think it is appropriate to change your BIOS clock twice a year? If you do, then choose localtime during your OS install. If you don't, choose UTC. I forgot about seesmic. Problem is that it doesn't seem to give me an 'advanced' option on the ' add new twitter account' screen. What version are you using? Mine is 1.6. There is a separate button for "Twitter Proxy" and one for "Twitter" (I think this arrived in newer versions of Seesmic I guess). The first is the one you need to choose, not the second. This will then give the input field for the REST API server. This definitely seems to work better/faster than either Mustard or the StatusNet official app. RQ > On Mar 28, 2011 8:18 PM, "Richard Querin" wrote: > > On 2011-03-28 7:31 PM, "dave yates" wrote: > >> > >> I just installed seesmic today--directions for setup with identi.ca > >> here: > > > http://todoleo-tech.blogspot.com/2010/11/how-to-set-up-identica-on-seesmic-for.html > >> > >> seesmic is nice. much more responsive than mustard. > > > > I forgot about seesmic.
