I took most of them with the intention of starting a library for the lvlug and the Linux sig of that other local computer users group. That never really came to fruition, so I've decided to donate most of those books to the MakeLehighValley organization that is forming. (I've tried to write to Dann just to make sure he has no objection--I sent an email to dann at thelinuxlink.net this weekend.) (2) Scanner for ISBN Bar Codes Before I actually turn the books over, I'd like to make a list of them to put on WikiLearn or elsewhere on the Internet. Does anyone here have access to one of those (portable) bar code scanners that can read the ISBN codes on (modern) books? I'd like to find one to borrow, or find someone that's willing to scan in about 3 cartons of books. I also don't know much about them--I presume that to get the actual book information (like author, title, ...), there is another program involved that has to access the Internet? If I don't get anywhere here, I'll go to the next library book sale (Bethlehem has one in late June), and find and talk to one of the people using a scanner like that. I am not sure, no offense of course, if i could then loan it out, but between that scanner and what seems to be a good site for your needs: http://isbndb.com/ We could probably do this together some weekend at my house in Whitehall. Perhaps this Saturday? I really wouldn't mind doing this on my own either, but it'd be nicer to do this with someone. - Clay From rhkramer at gmail.com Thu May 19 18:41:42 2011 From: rhkramer at gmail.com (Randy Kramer) Date: Thu, 19 May 2011 18:41:42 -0400 Subject: [Sig] =?iso-8859-1?q?=281=29_Donation_of_=28Dann_Washko=27s=29_Li?= =?iso-8859-1?q?nux_Books_to=09MakeLehighValley_=282=29_Scanner_for?= =?iso-8859-1?q?_ISBN_Bar_Codes?= In-Reply-To: <201105191752.025555@ms19.lnh.mail.rcn.net> References: <201105170958.41632.rhkramer@gmail.com> <201105191752.025555@ms19.lnh.mail.rcn.net> Message-ID: <201105191841.42729.rhkramer@gmail.com> Clay, That site (http://isbndb.com/) looks very useful! I do have to admit something--it turns out that I already have the ISBN numbers (and the authors / titles) in a computerized form, in fact they are at http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Wikilearn/LvlugLibrary. I completely forgot I had done that. (It's a pain getting old.) I should reorganize the page, though, to put the book titles near the beginning of the page. Thanks for your (offer of) help! Always nice to find out you're ahead of yourself though. So, it's good to hear you have it all taken care of. Looks like it's the normal work around the house, gaming and my own cpu work for me this weekend then. - Clay
