Intentional cross post, sorry!
At least *somebody* else thinks NEdit is a half-decent editor. ;-)
Disclaimer: I'm not familiar with linuxformat (magazine?) nor know who their
target audience is.

The article doesn't seem to be available online at
http://www.linuxformat.co.uk so a really short summary.
NEdit voted second best editor.
9/10 Vim - text/GTK
8/10 NEdit - Motif
GNU Emacs - text/GTK
7/10 Kate - KDE
Minimum Profit - GTK
6/10 CoolEdit - X
5/10 nano - text
3/10 gedit - GTK
The Verdict
"But NEdit wins through on simplicity - it's had several years to
perfect an environment that makes complex and simple changes
straighforward, and when it comes to editing single files, it's hard to
find a better graphical editor that will do any better.
The Gnome project would go well to learn form this, and if NEdit were
rebuilt against GTK it would lead to a far more useful editor than
gedit, ..."
