Maddie,

I did a quick search on google groups. I found a message (below) suggesting a
conflict between the soundcard and modem functions.

See if you can go into your bios and disable the sound temporarily, then see
if you can enable the modem.

If that's the problem perhaps someone at Linuxant knows the magic that will
allow you to use the sound and modem at the same time.

I can't help you with the conflict problem, but it seems that from that
point onward, you will have no sound. If you don't use the soundcard, try
disabling it in the BIOS. Then you may be able to unload the offending
module with rmmod. You may not even need to do this. Since it is a
module, it isn't a permanent feature of the kernel, but loaded when
required. If the AC97 isn't detected, the module won't be loaded. I have
disabled the AC97 soundcard and installed a Creative PCI card, using module
es1371, which doesn't clash.

If the modem is O.K. for the session after you run hsfconfig, insert this
line at the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

        hsfconfig --auto

This will make hsfconfig run every time you boot. I got this workaround
from Linuxant after I was losing my modem every time I rebooted. rc.local
is run last of all the files in /etc/rc.d/ If you need your modem to fire
up sooner, you may have to put the command somewhere else, but it will have
to execute AFTER the clash happens.
