here is my opinion of the differences (having tried all the ones you've
listed here)
1- RedHat is the big dog on the block everything is written for it it is
supported by everything when you get an RPM of your favorite new app, it was
put together with RedHat in mind. with that being said, it is the Microsoft
of Linux distro's. upgrades are forever change is comparatively slow (note
still no Reiser FS packaged with RH7.1 and no Gnome 1.4 but when you go to
XImian to get Gnome 1.4 RedHat 7.1 is first in line....................
2- Mandrake is bleeding edge Redhat. It is point-and-click heaven, but for
me still has not proven to be as reliable as it should be (an install of
anonftp and wu-ftpd gets you nowhere and you spend 2 weeks reading doc's and
posting to lists so you try RedHat 7.1 and bingo it fires up the first time
with no problems...............................
3- Debian is the most stable most polished distro i've ever used, however it
is a bear to install finding literature written in the last 4 years is
impossible and you have to use alien to repackage every app you want that was
not written for debian (no RPMS you need DEBS)
4- SuSe is cool, but convoluted. they try to make it easy to administer with
YAST and YAST2 and SAX and with the /etc/rc.config master file, but if you
are someone who'd rather open vi to get results, it's a real pain in the ass.
it is also rock solid and bleeding edge with respect to KDE. Kernels, and
filesystems
so here's my summary if you want something that works and you can learn to
use Linux on, try RedHat. if you want bullet proof with a truly kick-ass app
administration program, try Debian (if you don't mind a very painful initial
install), if you want the latest of KDE and point-and-click system
administration tools, try SuSE but if you want hot off the press very
mainstream distro and don't mind a problem every now and again stick with
Mandrake
