I like Brian's ideas. They're excellent subjects for a scripting
presentation. Perhaps an "advanced" presentation once the basics were
covered. I'd be especially interested in "use of value files for creating
shell architectures, and shell function libraries". I'm testing the waters
here, but I was making the assumption that an "intro" presentation to shells
and scripting was needed first. Something like:
Variables - creation and scope
Pattern Match and Variable Substitution
Conditional Tests and their use in Control structures
The for, if, while, return, exit, case, select constructs
Data I/O, Read, Redirection and exec
Function Definition and Typeset
Job control and Use of Signals
Traps
Actually, as I look at it, that's more than one presentation can handle unless
it's being delivered to a group of advanced users. I was assuming a group
(like the LVCG SIG) who would be starting closer to "Basic Knowledge of
Unix/Linux but Little of Shells/Scripting" rather than "Advanced Linux/Unix
User"
Seems to me that showing getops with its OPTARG and OPTIND variables being
used in a case statement would be great for the first group, but lost on the
second. Any feedback here? Somebody who would be attending the meetings as a
reciever rather than a presenter needs to comment. I'm volunteering again,
but only if there's interest.
