[Sig] kernel/module question

I've been trying to get a pctel winmodem to work in some distro besides Corel 
Second Edition (2.2.16 kernel)  I tried to copy and load the module that 
Corel installs, pctel_pci.o into my Slack 7.1 (2.2.16 kernel) installation.  
The modem would dial, connect and authenticate but pppd would die.  I booted 
the Slack installation using the Corel kernel and the modem worked so I used 
the Corel kernel sources to compile the kernel in Slack and it works.  Why 
does the Corel sources work with the module and not the Slack sources even 
though they are the same version?
