Here is the edited result of running chkconfig on Mandrake 7.2 running on my *System8* on 2001-02-18, showing only the configuration for runlevel 5 and my intention (that is, to leave a service running or to cancel it).
Some people might be interested in the *annotated chkconfig on my Mandrake 7.2*, which is unfinished (as are most of these wiki pages). (If you look at that, you'll see that I made some effort to find out what each of these services does (not always successful).)
It is at http://linuxnote.swiki.net/86.
I'd appreciate suggestions on either anything else I can disable, or any mistakes I'm about to make.
In order to get meaningful comments, here's what I expect to do with the machine:
-Main purpose: a Linux workstation, some development work
-Secondary purposes:
--An Apache webserver on my local LAN (only), to serve a local (private) wiki
--A Samba client so that it can use resources on Windows machines (later maybe a Samba server as well)
-gpm 5:off Leave off
-crond 5:on Leave on
-kheader 5:on Turn off (I don't think I need this, maybe unless I recompile the kernel or something else)
-netfs 5:on Leave on so I can mount Samba shares from remote computers
-network 5:on Leave on?
-random 5:on Leave on -- might be used for random stuff in freeciv
-rawdevices 5:off Leave off, I'm running without it now.
-sound 5:on Turn off, I don't use sound, and sound doesn't work anyway with my on board sound card
-usb 5:off Leave off

-ldap 5:off Leave off
-inet 5:off Leave off
-snmpd 5:off Leave off
-ypbind 5:off Leave off
-postfix 5:on I might need this -- the wiki and webserver will send email under certain conditions. (I don't have sendmail or anything similar configured at this time.)
-amd 5:off Interesting, this must have been on in my previous installation -- I may turn it back on or leave it off.
-named 5:on Turn off -- I'm not running a DNS, even for my LAN -- I'm using my ISP's DNS and "host" files.
-nfslock 5:on Turn off
-lpd 5:on Turn off? (Do I need this if I have CUPS running?)
-smb 5:off Leave off -- not needed for Samba clients, will be needed if I set up a Samba server.
-atd 5:on Turn off -- do I need this and crond?
-arpwatch 5:off Leave off
-postgresql 5:on Turn off -- I eventually expect to run postgresql or mysql, but I certainly don't need both at this time.

-ypserv 5:off Leave off.
-ipchains 5:off Leave off.
-anacron 5:on Turn off (I hope I don't have much downtime.)

-identd 5:on Turn off -- the TWiki might want this, but I don't intend for my local TWiki to be authenticated
-jabber 5:off Leave off

-routed 5:off Leave off
-drakfont 5:on Turn off (I don't think it is required for xfs.)

-hylafax 5:off Leave off
-cfd 5:on Turn off (I don't know what the cfengine is / does)
-xntpd 5:off Leave off

-ldirectord 5:off ?? Maybe I need this if I turn off heartbeat?
-nscd 5:off Leave off
-fetchmail 5:off ?? Would fetchmail be required to let Apache send email? Is it easier to configure than sendmail.?)
