I know there is a lot of cross-over interest between the Arduino,
hackerspaces and the LUGs so I thought some might appreciate hearing
about the "Arduino For Total Newbies" course that Mitch Altman of
Noisebridge will be doing on July 5th with Make Lehigh Valley. It
includes soldering up and programming a device based on the Arduino
platform that will turn off any television, like that annoying one in
the waiting room at your doctor's office or wherever. :-)
To attach this to Linux... Some of the skills picked up in this
workshop could be handy when messing around with a Raspberry Pi, if
you can get your hands on one. RasPi is to these Arduino what my
Android phone is to the first computer that went to the moon. ;-)

The Hacktory in Philly has the same crew doing just a soldering course
on the 7th. http://www.thehacktory.org/?p=2556
