Interesting.  I wasn't entirely sure yet how I was going to deal with 3 
unknowns in two equations, but essentially would have tried iterating.  (Hmm, 
which is essentially what I did in my thought process.)  

Another constraint I recognized is that the number of 4 for a penny pencils 
must be an even number.

I didn't fully understand your reference to Gauss--did Gauss have a specific 
procedure to solve problems like this?
