I have my test box rebuilt, and tried my restore plan this morning, with 
interesting results.

X broke, and I couldn't reconfigure it with out ripping out the video 
card, etc...

I also ended up an a very strange terminal, the output was all caps, and 
there was no underline cursor.

Following some instructions I found on the net, I stopped my window 
manager, gdm, and that dropped me to another log in prompt!?

I think my error was telling the archiver to overwrite files, and that 
is what munged my X configuration.
