Ok, took the time to try it--removing the last version works perfectly.  In 
fact, following up on my previous example (in which I deleted r1.2) I then 
deleted r1.3 and looked at the ,v file--everything looked fine (no hint there 
was ever a 1.2 or a 1.3).

For good measure, then rechecked in what was originally r1.3 (I had saved it 
elsewhere) and it was recorded as r1.2.  So, just perfect.
