right, so this sounds like a 'pre' X issue (system level USB isn't 
loading...or the like)...

The IMPS/2 would come into play in either a gpm.conf or XF86Config, but 
again, you'd have to be getting system level recognition of the hardware 
prior to that (during boot).

I'm looking at dmesg on a Suse 9.1 box here at work - I do see USB stuff 
loading on mine (sorry, I'd clip it but the xterm I peaked at is on 
another box across the hall). Do you see USB detection stuff in dmesg ? 
My install was the 'Server' install, pretty 'vanilla' package selection, 
no other special RPMs nor any Kernel tricks (stock kernel) at play.
