[Lvlug] bandwidth tester

Anyone know of a bandwidth measurement tool?  

I do NOT want to measure maximum bandwidth; I want to measure what's on
the wire at the moment.

I want to do something like this: measure the current bandwidth when I'm
just fetching email and surfing the web.  Then I want to run a remote X
Desktop and see what my bandwidth usage is like.  Then I want to have
another computer on the network start a remote X desktop and measure
again.

MRTG seem like it might do it, but that seems to be alot to install just
for this small piece of functionality.

Any ideas?
