I may be able to help you out here... I am no guru on building them, but I
know a lot of the pitfalls/misunderstandings about clustering. As for the
storage end of it, I may(possibly) be the most qualified person to talk to
about that.
I do pre-sales technical support for enterprise/SMB storage for a large
company, so I could help you out with understanding what options are out
there as well as the pricing.
If you want, contact me off list and we can talk about it further.
I will leave you this as food for thought... There is a HUGE difference
between a computational cluster (what you were talking about) and an HA
cluster (what your boss was talking about). They are designed in totally
different manners for totally different end results. Computational clusters
usually have (hopefully!) many nodes crunching stuff in the same or a few
racks. HA clusters may have only 2 nodes connected by dark fiber, some
fibre(sic) channel disk while having hundreds of miles between them.
Geographically dispersed clusters are not as rare as they once were.
Like I said, contact me off list if you want to discuss in more detail...
Brian
