[Lvlug] Authoring DVDs

I'm putting together a DVD of MOVs and MPGs that I've (legally)
downloaded from the Internets. After much pulling of hair, I figured
out how to convert the MOVs to MPEGs (use mencoder, NOT transcode!).
Using dvdauthor to create the DVD structure was easy and, of course,
mkisofs is a breeze to do. So i burns me a DVD and take it downstairs
and pop it in my DVD player.
The main thing I notice is the audio will eventually unsync with the
video. After noticing this on every video, I figure it's an encoding
problem and I head back to my computer to fix it. I play the DVD on my
computer and the performance is AWFUL. The computer will play a
few seconds of video, halt for 10 - 15 seconds, play a few seconds of
video, ad nauseum.
My commercially-bought Farscape (waves at Scott P.) video works just
fine. I checked the files I burned to DVD at each point in the process
(orginal file, converted MPG, dvdauthored file, mounted the iso) and
each one was fine. Hell, I even mounted the DVD and played the videos
via xine and they work great.
So why do I get such crappy behaviour when I run the DVD via 'xine -p
dvd:/' or on my RCA DVD player?
