Thanks!  I think my appetite for knowledge of sockets is, at least 
temporarily, assuaged.  (The telephone analogy in one of the links I found 
(and then summarized for myself) seems to provide a reasonable basic 
understanding.)

I may actually use sockets for something--if I do, I may take you up on your 
offer.
