With your stated Linux experience are you sure that this is the best
approach? Another approach
maybe to get a second hard drive then load the OS and use the other
drive as a secondary
to retreive the required files. This is a good case for backups. Data
retrieval from HDD should
be the last resort. If the drive is failing getting the data intact may
prove difficult. Also weigh the
importance of the data. If the data is of great value then carefull
consideration of a professional
is advised.
