I agree that using mplayer with the litany of options is very taxing,
although it offers a lot of flexibility. Dan Lischner and I had to rip
DVD's for this chickenshit school project and it WAS very frustrating.
However, there are some frontends you can browse through at FreshMeat:

We did not have the luxury of grabbing all the infrastructure needed for
these programs (such as Qt), much less setting it up on Windoze. But
Konverter is decent, so I've heard.
