[Lvlug] backing up ms sql databases

Our transportation software at work just upgraded to a system requiring
an ms sql server. I have very little experience with ms sql. The
question has arisen about backing up the database on a regular basis.
The program itself has a database backup wizard but if you are not
running this from the server you have to share out the drive hosting the
data on the server to the workstation. I think this is absurd. The
data is in a sql database, surely one should be able to "dump" the
database from the server without having to map a drive. You can do this
with mysql, so surely one should be able to do this is ms sql.

Perhaps it is a limitation of the application and they did some piss
poor coding. I suspect the app is written in visual C++.

Aside from backing it up through the application is there a component
similar to mysql or mysqladmin that would dump the database for backup?
Anyone know if any gnu/linux solutions to connect to a ms sql database?
