"There are very little difference between X.org and XFree 4.4 if any
noticable ones. The difference really is XServer based on kdrive.
XServer is what the testing ground of what Xorg will be in a year or
two. Native transpariency to name one killer feature. You can
installed XServer and play around with it right now (there are ebuilds
for it on BMG) but I suggest X.org. Also all the developers who also
disagreed with the license change (the good ones who believe in OSS)
are now working on X.org. Development will be a lot quicker now then
they were on XFree so expect to see those apparent changes in the next
few realeases of XServer."

"How about speed and memory usage? Comparable, faster?"
As far as memory usage I've heard it's godly. Beats the pants off of
XFree/X.org. This is because it's based off of kdrive. The webpage
is here:
http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~jch/software/kdrive.html
which is a "Tiny X Server." The webpage itself describes XServer as
"KDrive on speed." Webpage for that is here:
http://xserver.freedesktop.org/
Other than that I have no clue about XServer as I have never used it
but all you Gentooers can pick up the ebuild and read the 20 page
discussion about Xserver here:
