"Longhorn is a /major/ issue in professional IT, both development and
administration."

I couldn't agree more, when IT is faced with, lets shell out new
machines to run Longhorn because Microshaft won't patch my 2000/XP
boxen and Longhorn won't run on these machines they might choose the
OSS solution.

There is no reason that a college education person can't be sit down
in front of a Linux box that boots into g(k)dm and has Gnome/KDE has
the DE and learn how to use it in a matter of days. OpenOffice is
quite similar to microsoft's offerings and if you seriously didn't
tell them they were using Abiword and not Word I bet 95% of the people
wouldn't notice. Only the people who wanted clippy to help them out
with a TPS report would (would you like to use the new cover sheet?).

Longhorn is either going to set Microsoft is a permanant place as king
of software or let OSS gain a lot of ground. I really don't see a
grey area.
