I did it using apt on Fedora Core.  Man, was that a PITA! I had run out
of diskspace in /var and apt never complained and didn't install all of
the packages.

I had something similar; I had categories in Control Center, but nothing
in the categories.

Well, Google sez:

1. If you're running Mandrake, run the menudrake command and save the
default configuration

2. Try movin the ~/.kde directory to another name (or delte it, but
you'll be losing all of your default settings).

3. You might try moving /usr/share/applnk into the ~/.kde dir and see if
that helps.
