There was an interesting article posted on newsforge last week:

The promise of free MS software lured S. Africa into a deal with MS.  The
article makes some interesting points and the posts further flush these
out.  

It's shrewd, but profitable business for MS to get countries and
educational facilities hooked with give aways and rope them in for the
long run.
