Joel-
I've got exactly the same problem with prolog being the only broadband provider in my area. The story only goes down hill from there. Where I live (Hunterdon County, NJ) they only provide one way cable access. I guess rivers prevent two cable.<sneer> Since I only get one way, obviously I need to dial up but the server is always near full. So the only way to get on is to war-dial. But, the device used to access the cable has a built in modem that dials the server and it will only dial once every 20 seconds. That made it impossible to get on during the week because I never got home before peak hours which would last until 11 o'clock at night most nights.
So, there I was paying a premium price for high speed access that I could only get on during the mornings on the weekend. Gotta love prolog.
Technically it is not a monopoly as the FCC has provided cable companies with exclusive areas for operation. Where the problem lies provider access. I believe that other ISP's are supposed to be allowed to use the entrenched cable provider's cables but what has happened is the same that is happening with DSL: Other companies are allowed on but for some reason there are significant enough problems with customers complaining about outages and lost cable TV. The piggy backing ISP then has to go through the incumbent cable company for technical repairs who then turns around and blames the problems on the ISP. So customers are left without cable internet access and even without cable TV for weeks at a time.
