Don't let the fact that you have a lousy modem hold you
back, get a better modem!!
Does your campus use ethernet access for the internet?
Almost any PCI NIC card (as oppoesed to USB devices)
can work.
Maybe you can find a cheap generic *external* modem to
use with Linux. Maybe a 33.3 unit is languishing
somewhere and available for a song.
It's a dumb modem that needs a windows driver to
operate. And
